RIO DE JANEIRO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Rio de Janeiro International Airport - Galeao Cantonio Carlos Jobim International Airport (usually simply referred to as Jobim airport), telephone 3398 4526/2155, lies 20km north of Rio and has two terminals, T1 and T2. There are bureau de changes, banks, restaurants and cafes located throughout the buildings and Riotur, Infraero, TurisRio and EMBRATUR information desks in arrivals. Getting into the city shouldn’t be too tricky and transport options include:
|
Empresa Real buses
Air-conditioned buses that leave from outside the 1st floor of the airport, driving from Recreio dos Bandeirantes via the rodovaria (bus station), Centro, Santos Dumont airport, Flamengo, Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon. Indicate to the driver when you wish to stop (it might be useful to be armed with a map at this point so you know roughly when to get off) and remember to take your luggage with you!
Executivo Bus
Running hourly from the airport and stopping at all major hotels and beaches from 5.20am-00.12am, the route goes to the rodovaria, Centro, and along the beaches to Tijuca. Again, simply let the driver know when you wish to alight. Fares will be collected onboard.
Taxis
Special blue and red taxis can be found outside the arrivals hall. They run on a voucher system so you will need to find the State Tourism Authority Desk and purchase pre-paid taxi vouchers which you then present to the driver on entry. If you want to travel in an ordinary yellow taxi then make sure the meter is on and the fare is agreed before you jump in. A trip from the airport to the Centro should cost R$14 or R$29 to Copacabana. Alternatively, call a radio taxi company such as Central de Taxi on 2593 2598 or Coopertramo on 2560 2022.
Aeroporto Santos Dumont (SDU)
Telephone - 3814 7070
Rio’s domestic airport boasts one of the most spectacular flight approaches in the world, as aircraft swoop over Sugarloaf Mountain and watch Guanabara Bay unfold beneath their wings. A popular flight route is the Rio-Sao Paulo service (every 30mins, 6.30am-6.45pm, limited service at weekends) and tickets can be booked through Real/Reitur Tourismo, telephone 2564 2158). The airport is so close to the Centro that you could actually walk to it. Alternatively, a taxi will set you back R$5.
